Student representatives to the Copper Valley School District School Board presented their reports to the board at the last regular board meeting on April 6. Student representatives also have the opportunity to ask and answer questions at school board meetings and weigh in on board discussions.

Christian Finau- Slana and Upstream Learning Representative:

Slana: Slana had an archery tournament that went well. They will get results this Thursday. The students also did a poetry read on Read Across America day where the parents got to come and listen. The two high school students enjoy coming to Glennallen for Treks and a few days during basecamp. One of the students got to make ice cream in chemistry. The students also made fun crafts for decoration.

Upstream Learning: The students in Upstream Learning have been continuing with all their school activities. The students enjoy the shop classes with Mr. Stickney as well as the music classes with Mrs. Hoffmeister and Mrs. Helmer. The students had their MathCounts state competition. The kids at Upstream are progressing well in Spanish with Mrs. Scott. Upstream students went fishing at Tex Smith Lake to end the month of March.

David Scott- Glennallen School Representative

March has been an action-packed month for the students of Glennallen School. With the end of the year closing in fast many tasks still need to be completed. Thankfully Glennallen shows no signs of slowing down in its efforts. Glennallen has once again managed to mix productivity and fun by having pep assemblies, awards assemblies, spirit weeks and sports.

For high school, March started with one week of Base Camp before spring break, then started back up on Treks for two weeks. Mr Stickney also was teaching an after school woodworking class on March 23,25,30 and April 1.

On March 22-26 there was a spirit week for high school and junior high. Spirit week themes were: PJ Day, Tropical Day, Alaska Day, Class Colors and Black and Gold Day.

Also on the Elementary side there was Dr Suess week for K-2, this got some fun participation throughout the lower Elementary. Monday - PJs- "The Sleep Book" Day Tuesday - Mixed up socks "Fox in Socks" Wednesday - "Wacky Wednesday" - dress in crazy or mismatched clothes Thursday - "Green Eggs and Ham" - wear green Friday - "The Cat in the Hat" - wear your favorite hat and/or dress like Thing 1 or Thing 2.

For Sports Glennallen High School Wrestling has started as well as high school track. High school boys’ and girls’ basketball will be going to state this year after placing 1st (boys) and 2nd (girls) at regions. Also for basketball there were home games on the 19-20th, this provided lots of good games and quality entertainment. March 26 marked the end of the 3rd quarter and on the 31st there were junior high and high school awards assemblies. The year is coming to an end but that does not stop Glennallen school from achieving the best and having a fun time in doing so.

Lindsey Gordon- Kenny Lake School Representative

March of 2021 has gone by fairly quickly. Spring has sprung and with the new season comes the business that takes us all by surprise year after year. Kenny Lake School is tackling our to-do list and we’re feeling accomplished after this month.

In the K-2 classroom, the students are further exploring their storytelling skills with the use of puppets and other tools. Specifically they’ve been learning about retelling stories. We see a strong advancement in their motivation to learn and read as Kenny Lake held our annual “Iditaread,” where students compete in a race to see who can read the most books the fastest. In first was Acai Scheller (4th grade), second place Tobyn Dolge (7th grade), and third Liam Hand (2nd grade).

The 3-5 graders have wrapped up their Egyptian studies and worked on biographies for a short period. These biographies were done on varying celebrities such as Helen Keller, Jackie Robinson and others. They have since moved on to studying multiple individual countries.

Mrs. Hodges’ class as well as the middle schoolers got a surprising treat this month—Mr. Marshall requested that their classes be able to revive “Chosen Frozen,” so he took his students to Silver Lake for a day. With the help of Russell Scribner and others, the kids were able to enjoy multiple winter activities. On a separate note, the junior high was also able to complete their work for Kenny Lake’s yearbook and it will be ordered by the end of this week.

In Mrs. Purcell’s AP class, they went “old-school” and created a poetry book constructed of multiple types of poems. Her British Literature class also completed Frankenstein, which turned out to be a fantastic novel.

As for the general high school, prom is being prepared for, and will be held at the school on April 17th. The seniors also have lots of planning and crunching ahead of them, as deadlines for LEAP and graduation approach. They’re looking forward to their class trip which will take place in Seward, April 22nd-25th. Kenny Lake as a whole would also like to congratulate the Glennallen High School Panthers boys’ and girls’ basketball teams for qualifying for the state competition, and for the boys winning the regional championship. Good luck in Anchorage and make our district proud!

A report on the April 6 school board meeting and budget work session will appear in next week’s paper.
