Local Girl’s Heroic Beagle Rescue
By Joni Stone
Grandpa and her sisters all said, “Anniyah is a hero!” We couldn’t agree more, and this is the story.
Mavis, a spunky local beagle that is beloved by the Widgeon Way neighborhood, chased the 6 wheeler as it sped off. Down the road, through the trail, and to fishwheel, she followed, never missing a step. As Grandpa, Anniyah, Brejanay, and Alianna arrived at the fishwheel, Grandpa told the girls to tie Mavis up to the 6 wheeler so she didn’t get into the river. After securing Mavis to the 6 wheeler the girls headed down to the wheel.
In what seemed like a split second, Mavis had slipped her collar and was on a dead run towards the wheel. She tried to avoid the girls on the ramp and made an unsuccessful leap at the wheel. Her front legs scratched along the front deck, then she disappeared under the water.
Anniyah never hesitated but, dashing over and reaching down in the water, found Mavis’s snout and held on, pulling her up enough to grab her and pluck her from what could have been certain death for the beloved beagle.
They transported the wet, slightly exhausted beagle back to her owner and explained what had happened. We are all very thankful to Anniyah Stone for her quick action in saving our “community” beagle from what could have been a cold, wet death in the Copper River.
