GHS Passports and Travel Class Dreams of the Mediterranean
Teagan Rude - GHS Student
On May 26, 2023, local Glennallen High School students will embark on a 10-day journey through Europe “Along Mediterranean Shores.” This opportunity, organized and taught by Debbie Lorence, joins the Glennallen Geography & Travel class with students from Chicago taking the same trip. Traveling together, from Barcelona through Avignon, Nice, Florence, and finally Rome, we have the opportunity to explore cultures outside of anything we have known, broadening our knowledge of the world and giving us experiences we will cherish for the rest of our lives. However, we need our community’s support!
Each week, Alvin Albert, Brooklyn Allain, Jadeliah Dahl, Kristin Ewan-Dye, Skyler Griffin, Madeline Hamby, Julia Hobbs, Tina Johnson, Tierney Jones, Ellijah Neeley-Sanders, Ce’Anika Palacios, Grace Rogers, Teagan Rude, Kesler Seifert, Alice Serovy, Raejin Simeon, Jacob Stockhausen, and Brejanay Stone spend hours in class preparing for travel.
Preparation includes studying the terrain and cultures we will explore, but raising funds takes top priority on the agenda. To travel with all 18 students, the grand expense is $84,000. Thankfully, with the help of Migrant Education, we only need to raise around $50,000. That’s still a very large number for a very small, underfunded program! Only community support will make raising these funds possible.
How to help: Direct donations of cash, checks, or prizes are appreciated, but we also want to serve in return. Keep an eye out for events to participate in to support the program. The first Bingo Night will be held on October 14th from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at the American Legion and will include a dinner/bake sale. Raffles are currently being organized. Donations of prizes for bingo and raffles are greatly appreciated.
Theatre Movie Night will play “Monsters, Inc” in the GHS auditorium on October 18th. At the Trade Fair and Community Markets we will hold a table to sell baked goods and art. In February we will host a Valentine’s Day dinner. Dinners at other events will also be sold. Subway also plans to donate a day’s profits to the program.
Lastly, if there is any wood or water that needs hauling, or snow that needs shoveling, or labor of any kind required, we provide the opportunity to “rent a kid” (to rent student labor). Contributions and participation in any of the above events gives opportunities to bring the community together for some fun and takes huge steps toward raising the funds to make our Europe trip possible. Remember, every penny counts!
