Dimi Macheras, a talented Athabascan comic book artist, blends indigenous culture with the world of comics in ways that are both fresh and deeply rooted in his heritage.
Dimi’s journey, which began in the heart of his community, has led him to create the celebrated comic book series, Chickaloonies, a project that not only entertains but serves as a powerful representation of his people. Growing up in the remote yet deeply vibrant village of Chickaloon, Dimi's connection to his Athabascan roots has always been a vital part of his identity. "I wanted to create something that reflects our traditions, our stories, and the strength of our people," he says with a smile, his passion evident in every word.
This drive to tell authentic stories through the medium of comic books led Dimi to develop Chickaloonies, a comic that introduces readers to a colorful cast of characters inspired by Athabascan traditions, infused with humor, heart, and a sense of adventure.

Dimi's creative journey has not been without challenges, but it’s precisely those challenges that have shaped him into the artist he is today. “I didn’t have a traditional path. I had to carve my own way,” Dimi reflects.
Despite growing up in a community where access to resources and opportunities could be limited, his love for comics and his desire to share his culture with the world fueled his determination to succeed. Through sheer passion, self-teaching, and a supportive community, Dimi’s vision began to take form.
Chickaloonies, the comic book he wrote and illustrated with collaborator Casey Silver, not only serves as a medium of entertainment but also as a beacon of cultural pride. The series is a love letter to the Chickaloon people and the broader Athabascan community, weaving in traditional elements while introducing readers to a world where indigenous stories are center stage.
Through the whimsical yet meaningful storytelling, Dimi invites readers of all ages to connect with the rich cultural heritage of his people in a way that is accessible, educational, and—above all—fun.

What stands out most about Dimi is his humility and the warmth with which he speaks about his work. “Thanks for taking the time to meet and hear about my story,” he says, genuinely grateful for the opportunity to share his journey. For him, it’s never been just about the art. It’s about making space for indigenous voices and experiences in the world of comics, where they have often been underrepresented or misrepresented.
Dimi credits much of his success to the influence of two remarkable women in his life. His grandmother, Katie Wade, who founded the Ya Ne Dah Ah school, inspired him from a young age. "Her stories ignited something inside me," Dimi reflects. "She planted the seed for my love of storytelling and my desire to continue sharing our culture."
He also remembers his mother, Patricia Wade, whose work brought their stories to life for an entire generation of children across Alaska. Patricia used Dimi's artwork to add a visual element to their once oral tradition, a practice that helped preserve their cultural heritage. "My work aims to shed light on our culture," Dimi explains, "but I wouldn't be the artist I am without the love and support of these two amazing women who are no longer with us. They laid the foundation for me, and now, it’s my turn to continue their tradition of sharing our stories."
Dimi hopes to inspire the next generation to look to their own cultures for inspiration and collaborate with their Elders to create new stories for the generations that follow. Dimi Macheras’ work is a testament to the power of creativity, culture, and community. His comic book Chickaloonies not only brings joy to those who read it but also offers a window into a world that might otherwise remain unseen. As he continues to develop his craft and share his unique perspective, one thing is clear: Dimi’s journey is just beginning, and the world of comics is richer for it.
