Valdez Celebrates Pride

Posted

On May 29 and 30, Valdez celebrated its fifth annual Pride weekend, with a series of festivities dedicated to celebrating as a community. The events were organized by the volunteer-run organization Valdez Pride - which is dedicated to “creating space for the LGBTQIA+ community.”

On Saturday, a group organized by Selah Bauer gathered to march through Valdez. Rainbows, glitter, and hugs marked the afternoon.

Bunny Anderson and Madeline Hunter, who came down from Fairbanks to perform on Friday night with the group Klondike Drag, said they enjoyed connecting with Valdez’ “small but mighty” LGBTQIA+ community. Bunny remarked on feeling safe and comfortable in town, and enjoying the beauty of the area.

Valdez resident April Dean attended the parade with two of her children, Millie and Fin, and Fin’s partner Jaisyn. Dean is the mother of three children she described as “queer.” She said her family moved recently to Valdez and it was important to her to reach out to “find community for our children to feel comfortable.”

As always, Epiphany Church members came to the event, sporting a banner advertising their mission of “Welcoming all to grow in faith and serve in the grace of God's love.”
