The Copper River School District Needs Top Quality Board Members

Posted

There are two Copper River School District (CRSD) Board of Education (Board) seats open for election this coming fall. Candidates must register to run for either of the seats by August 7. Seat A is currently filled by Eileen Ewan who has indicated she will not seek re-election. This seat represents all areas of the Copper River School District north of Tazlina and serves a three-year term. Seat F is currently filled by Anna Bell-Hand who has also indicated she will not seek re-election. This seat represents all areas of the Copper River School District from Tazlina south and serves a three-year term.

Additionally, Seat D has recently been vacated by Preston Callison. This seat represents all areas of the Copper River School District from Tazlina south and serves through October 2028. To fill this seat, you must submit a letter of interest to the Board. The Board will then hold interviews at a regular public Board meeting and choose a candidate to fill the position.

I have served on the CRSD Board for the past 15 years and am currently the Board President with Eileen Ewan as Vice-President, and Hannah Bengtson as Treasurer/Clerk. It has, and continues to be, my honor to serve with such a diverse board for the betterment of our students. We need to continue as a strong diverse governance guide to the CRSD long into the future. Only with diverse, strong and resourceful guidance will the CRSD continue to provide an excellent education to our area youth so they may lead the world of the future.

For this reason, I am reaching out to our community members to consider running for the currently open Board seats or applying for the new midterm vacancy. You don’t need to be a parent of a current student to serve on the Board, nor do you need to be an expert on education. What we need are Board members with a desire to see students excel and especially those candidates with experience in business, budget review, human resource/personnel, time served on other boards, or knowledge of our area and cultures.

Being a CRSD Board member requires a significant commitment in time. It has been the most time-consuming Board I have ever served on, and the most rewarding. Board members attend trainings on educational methodology, legal aspects of public education, general governance, and much more. Board members will be required to attend an annual retreat (1-2 days) for Board self-reflection, strategic plan review and by-law review. These are in addition to preparation and attendance of regular monthly work sessions and Board meetings and committee meetings as needed. Know this before you apply or run.

So finally, to our business owners and leaders who need qualified well-educated employees, to parents directly invested in their children’s education or to community members who wish our future community, state and national leaders to be well educated and prepared for the world that will be out there and who will be leading when we are well retired, please consider becoming a CRSD Board member. Again, August 7 is the last day to register as a candidate.

To apply for the open Seat D, a candidate must reside within the represented area from Tazlina south (Chitina, Copper Center, Kenny Lake, McCarthy, Silver Springs, Tazlina, Tonsina, Willow Creek). Please submit a letter of interest to Board Assistant Dreama Dela Cruz at ddelacruz@crsd.us.

Our students need you!
