On December 16, the Senate Republican Caucus announced it had elected Senator Mike Cronk as its leader. The Copper Basin is part of Cronk’s district, which also includes communities along the Canadian Border and in the Yukon drainage.

In a press release, Cronk stated, “It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead the Republican Caucus.” He continued, “Together, we will bring forward solutions that begin the process of building a vibrant Alaska for our kids and grandkids.”

The legislative session begins January 20.

In other legislative news, Garret Nelson, R-Sutton, and Steve St. Clair, R-Wasilla, became the newest members of the Alaska House of Representatives on December 30.

The new representatives were appointed by Governor Dunleavy on Dec 24 to fill vacant seats left by Republican Representatives Cathy Tilton and George Rauscher. The former representatives were appointed to Senate Seats vacated by Republicans Mike Shower and Shelley Hughes, who are participating in gubernatorial campaigns. In the event of a congressional resignation, the Governor must appoint a replacement from the same party.

Governor Dunleavy will not be able to run for reelection due to term limits.
