Local Station Raises $17,641

KCAM’s local Share-a-Thon fundraiser ran from October 7-9 and helped raise over $17,000 for the local radio station. The donations will help KCAM update their remote broadcasting equipment, which they use for events like Glennallen Panthers basketball games and the Copper Basin 300, which attracts listeners from around the world.

Throughout the three-day event, the public was invited to visit KCAM’s office at Mile 187 on the Glenn Highway. There were snacks and beverages available, and people could also stop by to pick up one of the prizes for the many trivia contests running during the fundraiser.

Scott Hill, KCAM’s General Manager, first started working for the station in 1993. He said his favorite aspect of the Share-a-Thon is interacting with members of the public who stop by to see the station, volunteer to take phone calls, or come in to be interviewed on the air.

This year, KCAM’s on-air guests were all local community members. If you tuned into the radio station or streamed from the KCAM website last week, you may have heard conversations with local leaders like Dan Stevens, an elder from the Village of Chitina, or Jason Severs, pastor of Old Paths Independent Baptist Church.

Other guests included community members involved in local infrastructure, like Sharon Daniel from Copper Basin Sanitation, and Christina Weimer, who gives the winter road reports on KCAM for the Department of Transportation.

KCAM has been broadcasting in the Copper River Basin since 1964. According to a statement on the station’s website, “KCAM remains true to its Christian heritage while offering programs to serve the entire community. Programming includes national and local news, local weather, community news, family and children’s programs, and a wide variety of music ranging from country to contemporary Christian to oldies.”

Roland Maust, who moved to Glennallen this summer to join the KCAM team, told listeners during Share-a-Thon, “This station operates on prayers.” After expressing his appreciation for local listeners, Maust added, “You are partners in what we are doing here at KCAM.”
