kataleni, pronounced kat-a-len-ee, open water in winter

This stretch of river stays open all winter because groundwater feeds a spring here, keeping the water just above freezing and in motion. We collect our drinking water at this spot. Ice forms along the slower edges, while the current remains dark and clear over rounded cobbles. The open water provides feeding habitat for an American Dipper, which dives and walks underwater in search of aquatic insects.
