GMS Volleyball Shines in Scrimmages and Sweetheart Slam

Posted

After Tok canceled their tournament, our school was able to invite TriValley Middle School and Delta Middle School down for a last minute for a scrimmage weekend February 6 and 7. TriValley traveled down on Friday, and we kicked things off with a fun practice followed by a scrimmage that evening.

The February 6 scrimmage was played best two out of three sets, with varsity playing the first set, JV the second, and varsity closing it out. The scores were 25–18, 25–27, and 16–14 in a competitive and exciting matchup.

On Saturday, February 7, we played best two out of three matches. The Glennallen JV team went 2–0 on the day, defeating TriValley JV 25–18 and 25–21, and beating Delta JV 25–8, 22–25, and 15–6.

The Glennallen Varsity team also went 2–0, edging out TriValley Varsity 25–23, 23–25, and 15–12, and defeating Delta JV 25–3 and 25–8.

On Saturday, Brooke Lambert (4 games) led the team from the service line, serving 29 serves at a perfect 100%. She was followed by Joelle Scribner (2 games), who recorded 22 serves with a 92% serving percentage.

It was a great weekend of volleyball with strong competition, lots of growth, and good teamwork all around.

Last weekend, The Glennallen Panthers hosted five schools for the annual Sweetheart Slam Volleyball Tournament. Nome, Delta, Cordova, Tri-Valley, and Valdez all participated.

Scores for Glennallen in pool play were: vs. Cordova 19–25, vs. Nome 9–25, vs. Valdez 9–25, vs. Delta 1 18–25, vs. Tri-Valley 25–13, and vs. Delta 2 25–17. The Panthers played Delta 2 (ranked third) on Saturday in the single-elimination tournament and lost 20–25, 20–25.

Brooke Lambert (7th grade) and Raylee Rock-Albert (8th grade) led the team in serving with a perfect 100% serving percentage off 12 and 17 serves respectively. Autumn Riley (8th grade) led the team in aces with 11 and was also named All-Tournament. An ace is a serve that lands in the opponent’s court for a point without being returned, or is mishandled on the first contact so the serving team immediately wins the rally.

The team has continued to improve every week, and at this tournament they did a great job getting three touches on the ball and taking aggressive swings. This week they will hold their serve-a-thon fundraiser with no tournament scheduled, and next weekend (Feb. 27–28) they travel to Valdez for their final tournament of the season.
