Glennallen, AK -- On Thursday, December 4, the Copper River Basin Child Advocacy Center (CAC) held its 16th annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
More than sixty community members, including a large number of children, came to the American Legion Hall for a chili dinner. After everyone had the chance to eat, Gina Hoke, who has served as the CAC’s executive director for the past fifteen years, invited everybody outside where the tree was lit while snow fell and attendees sang Christmas carols.
The CAC’s goal is to support children and families who are faced with difficulties such as abuse allegations. They work with a variety of state and local organizations including law enforcement, Office of Children’s Services, tribal workers, medical providers and school districts.
In the past year, the CAC has been reaccredited by the National Children’s Alliance, a process with a lengthy application and multiple interviews. They also completed mandatory reporter training for staff in three different area school districts in the Copper River Basin, Tok, and Valdez communities and participated in a large number of outreach events.
Scott Somers, the CAC’s board chair and this author’s husband, also said a few words to those gathered Thursday night in the cold. “It’s some of the most important work we do in this community,” he said, speaking about how the CAC creates a safe place for children and “protects those who need protection.”
Zachary Dysinger, CRNA’s Child Development Director, has served as a CAC board member since January of 2024 and said in an interview that he knows “how challenging it is for kids to get protection services out here.” He especially noted how much he appreciates Hoke’s hard work and sacrifices to support the vulnerable in our community.
After more singing indoors led by Terry Keizer and Matt Morse, guests were invited to enjoy dessert. The evening ended with a surprise visit by Santa Claus giving out candy canes and Christmas cheer.
The CAC is currently looking for members to serve on their board of directors. To learn more about their work and mission, you can contact the Child Advocacy Center at 907-822-3733. In the meantime, please enjoy the colorful tree lit up each evening outside the American Legion Hall when you drive through Glennallen this holiday season.
