Carla Lynne Hinshaw (1947-2023)

January 29, 1947- May 6, 2023

Carla Lynne Hinshaw was born into a proud Basque family on January 29, 1947, in Boise, Idaho where she lived with her mother Edith Elizabeth Odiaga and father Refino Odiaga and siblings Wendy and Michael until she finished high school.

Carla’s favorite animals were bears. She had quite a collection. In fact, she was nicknamed “Bear” by her mother when she was a little girl. This was because she was a bear to wake up to in the morning. Carla was a stubborn Basque woman, always proud of her Basque heritage. Despite the challenges and struggles she faced during her life, she remained a very loving and giving person with a smile that would brighten your day. She had a heart of gold and shared her love freely.

Carla lived in the Copper Basin area for many years prior to moving to Valdez. She loved music, especially old rock ‘n’ roll, daisies, and the color blue. She often referred to herself as an “old hippie” and enjoyed dancing in the living room with her loved ones. She would often sit cross-legged on the floor and could get up and down with the ease of a youngster. She cherished hugs and gave them freely to others.

Carla was preceded in death by her mother and father, Grandmother Rosa Odiaga and Grandfather Resino Odiaga. Also, her ex-husband Daniel Lee Hoadley Jr., and husband Cecil Francis Daniel Hinshaw.

Carla leaves behind her daughter, Brandy Rose Schewe, son-in-law Josh Schewe and four beautiful grandchildren, Winnie, Harriet, Joselyn, and Gage, all of Albert Lee, Minnesota. Her daughter, Trishia Lynne Kendall and son-in-law Loren Jason Kendall of Valdez, and a grandson Conner Dale Kendall of Tennessee. Carla also leaves a son or daughter we have not found yet, and a sister Wendy Odiaga of Lake Oswego, Oregon and brother Michael Refino Odiaga of Boise, Idaho.

She left behind many close friends. Some of these friends include Coral Ann Clark and Joel Rae Clark, their son Dustin Clark and grandchildren Haylie Marie, Evan Rae, Autumn Rayne Clark, and Arianna Grace Madrid. But that is just one family. There is also Matthew Krinke, Harriet Kholmann, Shawna Davis, Maxwell Benoy, Romona Mooney, Janis Johnson, Pamela Fox, Joan Heiken, Shannon Mahoney-Irish, Carla also leaves behind her many friends at the Valdez Senior Center including Theresa Karlowitsch, Tierney Washington, and Jane Haltness; along with all her Emblem Club sisters and brothers near and far.

A memorial service for Carla was held at 3PM at the Valdez Elks Lodge on July 18, 2023, where her family and friends gathered to celebrate “the Bear.”
